Mljet: Why we love this place
As you may have noticed we arrived on Mljet Island about a month ago. Seems to be a long time, but nothing compared to Odysseus who, according to Homer, spent seven years here with Calypso. The bay of Polace offers a secure anchoring and is nestled in the National Park which covers the western part of the 40 km long Island. Mjlet is wild and pure nature, 90% of it are covered with forest. We did a couple of day trips, one in particular to the salt water lakes and the Saint Mary Monastery.
The lakes used to be sweet water lakes till the monks who build the monastery digged a channel to the sea so they could run their mills but lost the precious water.
Staying on Mljet is like time travel, no supermarkets, no fashion or tourist shops and the ferry arrival is the highlight of the day. A couple of restaurants offer traditional dishes with goat meat, wild pork or seafood. Local farmers also sell a wonderful fresh goat cheese.
The soundtrack of the Island are cycades, night owls and some rattling anchor chains. It will be difficult to leave as we started to making friends here and even got a "Mljet passport" offered ;-).
